Spring has Sprung | 1st March 2008

……….Spring has sprung, the grass is riz……………
……at least that’s what we are all hoping for as our thoughts turn to warmer sunnier days.

Spring is a time of new beginnings and here at Table Top we have a number of exciting new products to put a spring in your step!

We have a fabulous range of picnic ware baskets from Optima, in sizes to suit even the smallest picnic party. We even have one for the children!

Our traditional cast iron cookware by Chasseur comes in a fabulous range of colours and styles and is environmentally friendly too, as it comprises 80% recycled iron. This cookware looks as good in the oven as it does on the table…especially when it is placed on a Just Slate trivet. The Just Slate Company tableware is naturally individual and look stunning for dinner party chic. ….so much so that Gordon Ramsey and Michael Wishart use them in their restaurants in London, Edinburgh and the USA!

Spring is also the time when we celebrate Easter, and for those who would rather steer the little ones away from chocolate towards a longer lasting gift, there are crockery and cutlery sets with them in mind.

You might like to have a browse, we are certain you’ll find something you’ll love!

Did you know?

Many are familiar with the truly stunning designs that Dartington produce, but did you know that Dartington also have a range of awards and personalised gifts which are perfect for corporate events, trophies, special anniversaries and business gifts.

Meet the Designers
Matthew Persson initially trained as a glassblower and created the Rebecca range as his first crystal suite for Dartington. He also designed the Mia glass drinkware range and the Shell bowls suite which carries the Master Glassmakers signature.
Rachael Woodman says,”Dartington always provides a harmony of grace and practicality. I like to think that my namesake collection continues to deliver this essential combination”

Hilary Green designer of Cirrus and Ebony drinksware delights in their simplicity and freshness and feels that black or white is perfect for co-ordinating a look for the home. Hilary also designed the Teal, Henna, Indigo and Spark ranges and the Wibble vases.

Sarah Peterson used a combination of hand techniques to create a visual focus point in the Fusion crystal suite, so the form and finish of each piece will never be the same ensuring a truly unique item.

Probably the best known name of all the Dartington designers is Frank Thrower, an acknowledged icon of 20th century design. His simple and effortless style was the source of Dartington’s creative inspiration for many years. Although Frank died in 1987, many of his timeless classics live on in today’s Dartington collection.

Did you know....

Rattail is one of the oldest designs of cutlery and dates from 1700’s

It was also called Hanoverian because it spanned the reigns of George I, II and part of III’s reign, although later the two designs developed their own distinctive patterns

The name developed from the way in which it was first made, with the rat’s tail being the tang of metal that secured the bowl to the handle of the spoon and the prongs of the fork.

The pip that can be seen on the tip of the fork’s handle is on the reverse of the spoon’s handle. This is because in Georgian times the table would be laid with the spoons facing bowl down

In America Rattail is known as Queen Anne design

Hallmarks were introduced in England in 1327 when the medieval guilds began to test silver to make sure that it was of the  standard. This is regarded as the world’s first official quality testing . Sterling was deemed as genuine by an image of the monarch’s head on coinage and by the hallmarks impressed on silverware. Every piece of precious metal  has to be submitted to an Assay Office for independent testing and hallmarking. It is illegal to sell silver in Britain without hallmark
